Union Leagues

Fraternal organizations, originally founded in the North to promote Union loyalty, that expanded into the postwar South as political and civic clubs organizing Black voters for the Republican Party.

Fraternal groups loyal to the Union and the Republican Party that became political and civic centers for blacks in former Confederate states, helping enroll newly enfranchised Black voters, campaign for candidates, and build schools and churches.
