A pejorative term for white southerners who supported Reconstruction and cooperated with Republican state governments, viewed by other white southerners as traitors.

A pejorative term used for southern whites who supported Reconstruction. Like carpetbaggers, scalawags became targets of the Ku Klux Klan and similar vigilante organizations.
