James Martin, born enslaved on a Virginia plantation in 1847, describes witnessing a slave auction as a child. Interviewed in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project, his testimony was published in 1972 in George P. Rawick's edited WPA-narrative collection.

Recalls antebellum slavery rather than Reconstruction itself -- included because Notion's Textbook Chapter relation links it to this chapter, not because this pilot re-curated topical fit (see docs/notion-migration- evaluation.md's note on the 96%-populated but not topically-curated Chapter↔Source relation).
