Sand Creek Massacre
A compiled record of the November 29, 1864 massacre of some 200 Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children at Sand Creek, Colorado Territory, by Colorado volunteer troops under Colonel John Chivington: a contemporary Rocky Mountain News account defending the attack, and the March 1865 congressional testimony of interpreter John S. Smith describing the killing of surrendering noncombatants in detail.
Linked to this chapter via Notion's Textbook Chapter relation (and to a second chapter not covered by this pilot), even though Sand Creek is conventionally treated as part of the Indian Wars/westward expansion narrative rather than Reconstruction proper -- included here because that is what the source corpus actually links, not because this pilot re-curated topical fit.
